297 Bulgarian victims of trafficking in 2009

A total of 297 Bulgarians became victims of trafficking in 2009, Antoaneta Vasileva, Secretary of the Bulgarian National Anti-Trafficking Commission, has announced. She pointed out that the actual number of the victims of trafficking is higher, as not all of them want to talk about it. “The number of victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation is on the rise,” Vasileva added. She also said that people must distinguish between illegal crossing of borders and trafficking of people, as trafficking usually aims at exploitation. Ms. Vasileva also called on the Bulgarians abroad, whose traffickers have taken their identity cards, to try and find a way to contact the Bulgarian embassies or the police.
