Unwillingly, the Bulgarian national football side played a control game versus a club team. On 14 November in Sofia Bulgaria had to play versus Bolivia, however the Latin American team failed to keep its commitment. As a result the Bulgarian Football Union leadership had to find a last-minute replacement. This led to the game in Kemal Ataturk Stadium in the Turkish resort of Antalya in which the Bulgarian national football side played versus the winner in the UEFA Cup Shakhtar Donetsk. The game ended in a goalless draw. The arrangements surrounding the match were made even worse by the raging flu in Bulgaria which prevented some key Bulgarian players from joining the lineup of head coach Stanimir Stoilov. Despite the draw, the Bulgarian coach was satisfied with the match, especially by the defense. On Wednesday the Bulgarian national side will play versus Malta as guest.

In the meantime, the junior national side lost 0:1 to the obscure FC Sportist Svoge in a friendly match. Next the young players will face Israel, in the European qualifications. Regardless of the outcome however Bulgaria’s junior team will not make it to the further qualification stages for the 2011 European Cup in Denmark.

Elitsa Kostova won the tennis tournament in the French city Le Havre with a prize fund worth USD 10,000. At the final the national player for the Fed Cup (unofficial world championship for women) defeated German Sina Haas 6:0, 6:4. By winning the title the Bulgarian has earned 12 points for the WTA rankings and will be among the world’s 340 best players. In the meantime, it transpired that Bulgaria’s top male player Grigor Dimitrov would no longer play this season. 18-year old Dimitrov refused participation in the tennis tournament from the Challenger series in Champagne, Illinois, with a prize fund worth USD 50,000. He is away because of flu.

Evgenia Radanova finished 10th in 1500 m and 19th in 500 m at the fourth start of the World Cup Short Track in USA, a second qualification for Vancouver 2010. At the semifinals in 1500 m the Bulgarian finished second and dropped out of the finals. At the shorter distance of 500 m Olympic vice-champion Radanova dropped out from the series.

We end with basketball. The holder of the Levski Cup was defeated as guest by the Serbian OKK Belgrade 100:103 following an extra time in a match from the second round of the Balkan League in Belgrade. In this way Levski is with a win and a loss following the start of the tournament on 17 October. The leading team is OKK Belgrade with two wins. Spartak from Pleven, Central Bulgaria, scored its first success in this year’s edition of the Balkan League with a 77:60 win in the second round versus Montenegrin Mornar.
