Svishtov commemorates memory of 1977 earthquake victims

Today the Danube town of Svishtov marks the 35th anniversary from the devastating 1977 earthquake that took the lives of nearly 120. It had a magnitude of 7.2 and occurred on March 4 1977 at 09:20 pm. The epicenter was in the Vrancea Mountain in Romania and the earthquake was felt throughout Bulgaria. Three blocks collapsed in Svishtov, killing whole families, as 27 of the victims were children. The St. Trinity Cathedral in the town, built up by craftsman Kolyu Ficheto was also damaged and its full restoration ended barely in 2004.
