Bulgarian writer Leda Mileva passed away at the age of 93

Bulgaria’s Leda Mileva - writer, translator, author of poems and plays for children, has passed away at the age of 93. Leda Mileva died on her birthday - Feb. 5. She was born in Sofia in 1920 and was the daughter of the talented poet and journalist Geo Milev. She graduated from the American College in Bulgaria, then Sofia University Climent Ohridski. After World War II she was the head of the childnren’s and adolescents’ radio broadcasts on Radio Sofia, editor of the magazine "Pionerska samodeinost” and “Drujinka”, also she was editor of "National Youth" and "Bulgarian writer" publishing houses. From 1966 to 1970 she was Director General of the Bulgarian National Television. From 1970 to 1972 he was deputy head of the Printing and cultural cooperation department with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. By the end of 1978, she was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to UNESCO, Paris. 

After returning to Bulgaria, for a period of ten years, she was chairperson of the Union of Bulgarian translators. She set up the specialized journal for foreign literature “Panorama” and was its editor-in-chief from 1980 to 1991. She was for many years chairperson of the Bulgarian Center with the International PEN club. She was a deputy in the 8th and 9th National Assembly as well as an MP in the 7th Great National Assembly.

She is the author of more than 30 books of poetry for children, theater and radio plays, translated into English, French, German, Russian, Polish and other languages. She is the author of numerous articles on the problems of literature, translation, and the international cultural cooperation. She was translator also of contemporary American, British and African poetry. In 2008, she was awarded with the national prize Konstantin Konstantinov for overall contribution in the publishing of children’s books.
