The Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks on December 20 the Saint Ignatius Day. Saint Ignatius is also known as Ignatius the God-Bearer. Tradition suggests that when Ignatius was a little boy, the Savior hugged him and told his followers: “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”. According to traditional beliefs, the Day of Saint Ignatius gives the start of the New Year and the Christmas celebrations. It is very important what man or woman first crosses the threshold of the peoples’ homes-good or bad. If the person is good, the New Year is expected to be good for the family. On this day people should not take anything out of their homes, so they do not take fertility out of the house. Moreover, one must not borrow or lend anything to anyone. If people go out, their hands must be full on their way back home. If it snows on St Ignatius Day, the New Year would be very fruitful. If the weather is sunny, people should expect drought and if the weather is cloudy, the new crops will be abundant.
