The traditional martenitsa amulet is running to find a place on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage.
The nomination has been launched at the meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the organization in South Korea. The martenitsa is a joint nomination of four countries where this custom is common – Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Macedonia.
Though there is an ongoing dispute of the origin of the martenitsa and it is found in various legends, Bulgarians, Macedonians, Romanians and Moldovans exchange red-and-white tassels on March 1 for the sake of health and luck.
