The top priority of the government is to protect the health of people, Energy Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, Environment Minister Neno Dimov and Minister of Agriculture Rumen Porozhanov said while meeting with representatives of the National Association of Grain Producers, the steering committee against natural gas extraction and the local authority in the town of General Toshevo, Northeastern Bulgaria.

Temenuzhka Petkova said that no steps for the issuance of a permit would be taken without a position on the assessment of the impact on the natural environment.

The region’s residents are concerned over investor plans for the extraction of natural gas in the region. They claim extraction will be hazardous for the health of the local population and will threaten agriculture in the Dobrudzha Plain.

At the end of last year the Municipality of General Toshevo organized a referendum at which 97% of the people who went to the polls voted against plans to extract natural gas in the region.
