In 2016, Bulgaria ranked first in Europe as per the strength of its prison population. This is suggested by data released by the Council of Europe and quoted by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

On 2015, the number of prisoners in Bulgaria was 10.8% up. Turkey saw an increase of 9.5% followed by the Czech Republic (7.6%), Serbia (6.6%) and Denmark (5.5%).

Bulgaria is among the leading countries in Europe as per prisoners sentenced for theft. One prisoner costs the state budget 57.11 euro per day, with the European average being 51 euro.

In September 2016 Bulgaria had 8347 prisoners including ones on remand (without a sentence). Every prisoner had an average of four sq. m to live.
