On the first Sunday after Easter we honor the memory of one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ – Thomas the Apostle, also known as Doubting Thomas. Doubting Thomas was skeptical at first when he heard that Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to the other apostles, saying, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. On the first Sunday after the resurrection Jesus appeared again to the Apostles and this time Thomas was with them. When Jesus invited Thomas to touch his wounds and behold him, Thomas showed his belief by saying My Lord and My God. Jesus then said: Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed. Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed. Thomas Sunday (Antipascha) is the last day of the week after Easter. It is unofficially known as “Empty pew Sunday”. Women paint eggs again on that day and commemorate their dead relatives. People named Toma, Tomislav, Tomislava celebrate their name day on Thomas Sunday.
