Double standard: Bulgarians buy lower quality, higher priced foods compared to Europeans

Photo: picture library

Identical foods are often sold in Bulgaria at higher prices and with lower quality compared to other European markets. These are the findings of a survey of the double standard in supply of foods on the Bulgarian and European markets, the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry has said.

The total of 106 samples have been taken covering 53 foods and drinks of one and the same brands supplied to Bulgaria and to selected EU Member States (Germany, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic).

In the Bulgarian analogue of a baby food for instance a higher content of vegetable oils (including palm oil) has been found and a lower content of microelements and vitamins. Although the Bulgarian analogue is of proven lower quality it is sold at a price similar to prices in West Europe.
