In the Christian Orthodox calendar 6 May is the day of St. George the Victor. In Bulgaria Gergyovden, St. George’s Day, is an official holiday, declared a day of valour and of the Bulgarian army. For centuries, St. George has been depicted on Bulgaria’s military flags and medals of honour. Celebrations on this day begin with a ceremonial holy water ritual and sprinkling of the military banners and battle-honored flags, traditionally performed by the Bulgarian patriarch in front of the monument to the Unknown Soldier in Sofia. The ceremony is attended by President Rumen Radev who salutes the army. Today’s most eagerly awaited event is the traditional St. George’s Day military parade, which this year marks the 140th anniversary since the formation of the Bulgarian army. This year it is expected to be joined by more participants with heavy armoured vehicles as well as aircraft. The parade kicks off at 10 AM with soldiers representing all branches of the army and military universities in Bulgaria. Viewers will be able to see practically all machines in use by the Bulgarian army as they cross Prince Alexander I square in the centre of Sofia. MI-17 helicopters flying the national flag, MI-24 and Cougar helicopters, military-transport, training and combat aircraft will be flying overhead.
