The Ambassador of Serbia to Bulgaria Vladimir Curgus and the Head of the European Commission Representation in this country Ognian Zlatev have announced that there is a good chance a new border checkpoint will be built between Bulgaria and Serbia connecting the Bulgarian province of Montana with the Serbian one of Pirot thus cutting substantially the travelling distance between Northwestern Bulgaria and Northeastern Serbia.

Figures were quoted saying that five years ago 40,000 Bulgarians traveled to Serbia and 70,000 Serbs visited Bulgaria. For 2017 the figures stand at 420,000 and 500,000, respectively. The new border crossing can be built using funding allocated to connectedness by the European Union.
