A team from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems are working on a hydrogen generator that does not use aqueous electrolytes but solid polymer electrolytes instead.

In the words of the institute’s director Prof. Evelina Slavcheva, the hydrogen generator can successfully be applied in hydrogen filling stations and is compatible with the energy from renewable energy sources. This means the generator can also be used in photovoltaic parks to process the excess energy they produce. It cannot be used in the new hydrogen cars, as the hydrogen for them is stored in high-pressure bottles or in hydrogen-absorbing materials. A patent application for the hydrogen generator has been submitted.
