Ombudsman wants total ban on double standards in EU

Huge economic interests stand behind the different quality and content of products in the EU, Ombudsman Maya Manolova said in Brussels speaking to the European Parliament's Committee on Petitions. The practice of consumer discrimination has existed for a long time and has spread throughout the community. The Ombudsman announced that the EP Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection had with the overwhelming majority agreed to negotiate a proposal for legislative changes against the food and drink differences. Manolova fears that the EC's proposal to allow for "minor variations in ingredients and quality" in products of the same brand was a way to circumvent the ban on double standards.
