Bulgaria’s aeronautical engineer Widen Tabakoff was part of the team which sent the first man to the Moon. He invented an alloy which endured high temperatures and protected the rocket engine, the former pilot of fighter aircraft at the US Air Force Georgi Drenski explained during the opening of the documentary exhibition themed Unlimited Space of the Human Mind dedicated to the life and the deed of the renowned Bulgarian scientist Widen Tabakoff. The House of Culture Boris Hristov in Plovdiv hosts the exhibition. It will end in two weeks. Professor Tabakoff is a famous name in the space research field, yet he is not that popular in Bulgaria. In 2014 Professor Tabakoff became an honorary member of NASA shorty before he passed away. He trained over 300 experts in engineering mechanics at the University of Cincinnati. He worked under many secret projects, Rumiana Atanasova, co-organizer of the exhibition pointed out. Professor Tabakoff is an example of how a person coming from a small village (Stakevtsi, Belogradchik municipality) can reach the heights in astronautics. The US astronaut Neil Armstrong who was a friend of Professor Tabakoff asked him whether he would return alive from the Moon shortly before the start of the Apollo mission. Professor Tabakoff was confident that Apollo would fulfill its mission successfully, Georgi Drenksi who was Professor Tabakoff’s last PhD student at the Cincinnati University says.
