The joint Bulgarian-Macedonian commission on controversial historical issues is sitting in Skopje on 6 and 7 June, focusing on ancient history and the way it is presented in 5th form textbooks in Bulgaria, and 6th form textbooks in North Macedonia.
The aim is for the experts to coordinate the positions of Bulgaria and North Macedonia so as to depoliticize and denationalize the historical narrative.
At the commission’s meeting in Sofia in April the two sides exchanged notes and views on common ancient and medieval history. According to the commission’s co-chair on the Macedonian side Dragi Georgiev the differences are in the cartographic interpretation of the material.
