Bulgaria continues to be among the EU countries which place at the bottom of the regional innovation scoreboard. Government spending on research remains low in Bulgaria, a report of the European Commission shows. The level of innovations in Europe has improved for the fourth consecutive year and at the global level the EU has surpassed the United States for the first time, yet it still lags behind Japan and South Korea. Due to the rapid increase of the enterprises from the technological sector Bulgaria has improved its performance in the innovations field, but it is still not enough for this country to join the group of the innovation leaders, the report further informs. Bulgaria remains among the modest innovators thanks to the development of the Southwest and the Central South regions. North and East Bulgaria are the regions with lowest spending on scientific research, internal innovations and patents among 238 regions in 23 countries included in the report.
