A retrospective exhibition of works by prominent Bulgarian artist and cartoonist Rayko Alexiev (1893 – 1944) opened in Sofia City Gallery. The exposition will be on display until July 14. It consists of cartoons and caricatures from first pages of emblematic humoristic papers from the past, some of which are the reason for the author to fall as one of the first victims of the communist regime imposed in 1944.  Photo: Ani Petrova

The restoration of the lion at the Monument of Freedom on Shipka Peak has begun. The four-meter bronze figure standing above the main entrance of the monument is in need of urgent repair. The last one was made in the early 1980s. The lion was cast in 1929 at the Sofia-based military arsenal by a group of masters after the design of sculptor Kiril Shivarov. It was mounted at Shipka Monument for its unveiling in 1934.  Photo: BGNES
