President Radev vetoes amendments to Black Sea Coast planning act

Last week protesters urged the president to veto the new rules regarding wild camping

President Rumen Radev imposed a veto on two paragraphs of the law amending and supplementing the Black Sea coast planning act, the presidential press service announced.

Several protests by environmentalists in front of the presidency building last week demanded that President Radev veto the amendments.

In the opinion of the president, the wild camping rules are being made more restrictive with the introduction of considerable restrictions compared to the rules now in place. This amendment was submitted between the two parliamentary votes of the draft bill, without any public discussion, leaving a number of questions unanswered. The President points out that the restrictions on wild camping along the Black Sea coastline are in place though no locations where camping is allowed have been set down.

Besides restrictive rules the amendments also enforce severe sanctions in the event of violations. In view of the lack of clarity regarding the capacity of the locations where tents, campers or caravans are allowed, it cannot be said categorically that the most eco-friendly measure has been found. Clearly there is a disproportion between the severe sanctions for citizens and the lack of severity with regard to the due care by the state, reads the press release of the presidential press service.
