Heat wave pushes up electricity consumption in Bulgaria

The high temperatures over the past week have boosted electricity consumption in Bulgaria by 10-15 percent.

The electricity distribution companies are urging consumers to save electricity so as to avoid electricity supply problems. Summer is a time for repairs at power plants and some are not functioning. For now the national energy system is coping without resorting to the backup capacities which are only tapped when there is a critical shortage of electricity. In the past month the national energy system has needed to use reserves twice because of the unplanned switch-off of a reactor at Kozloduy NPP, according to the National Electrical Company.
