In Pleven, northern Bulgaria, the grape picking campaign was officially open before the oldest acting winery in Bulgaria – the Institute of viticulture and wine-making, inaugurated back in 1890. The opening programme featured re-enactments of the Dionysus’ Feast. According to the tradition, presented by Norther Folklore Ensemble, young girls were crushing grapes barefoot, as the initial stage for preparing the raw material for wine fermentation was included as part of the process in the past. The vintage collection of wines in the winery was also demonstrated, showing the wine samples throughout the years.  Photo: BTA
