Bulgaria seeks termination of disadvantageous contract with US thermal power station

The government has authorized the ministers of finance and energy to negotiate with the company ContourGlobal on the termination of the contract for the purchasing of electric energy.

The deal for the purchase of electricity by the state at non-market prices was concluded in 2001 between the National Electricity Company and ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3. The motive cited for this move is the European Commission decision to bring proceedings against Bulgaria for distortion of competition. According to EU rules the contract constitutes incompatible state aid. The complaint was lodged in Brussels by the state regulator – the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission.
