Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva confirmed Bulgaria’s support for the European future of Albania and North Macedonia during a meeting in Sofia with Albanian MPs.

“We are among the biggest supporters of the idea of Albania and the Republic of North Macedonia opening negotiations with the EU in October. It would be a historical mistake if the two countries were to be separated,” Ekaterina Zaharieva said at a meeting with the chair of the foreign policy committee of Albanian parliament Mimi Kodheli. At their meeting the Bulgarian foreign minister also expressed the expectation that the 2017 national minorities law, enabling the Bulgarian minority in Albania to study their mother tongue, will be implemented in full.
