The Rhodope Mountain where Lactobacillus Bulgaricus reigns supreme

There are many lactic acid products in the world, but the tradition is strongest in Bulgaria. The name of the bacteria that plays the most important role in the fermentation process is called Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, and for a reason.

Some of the best yogurts come from the Rhodopes, and one of the places they are made is Momchilovtsi village. “Yogurt festival – culture and traditions” is the name of a festival, whose latest edition is now opening in the village, and which has been taking place in Momchilovtsi since 2015. Among the organizers of the event is a Chinese company - BrightDairy. Since 2008 company specialists have been studying the effects of yogurt and the environment in the Rhodope Mountain on human health and longevity. This year, the festival programme offers a host of different events – expositions, tastings, competitive product presentations – and not just of yogurt but of different kinds of cheese made using authentic Bulgarian technologies. And also – exhibitions, seminars, a Queen of Yogurt – Miss Rhodopes national contest, a diverse folklore programmes, fun and games…
