Adopting a new methodology of investigating serious road accidents, effective collection of the sanctions imposed, road safety audits of all roadways, not just motorways – these are some of the recommendations from a report by the State Agency Road Traffic Safety.

On the basis of this first thorough analysis of road traffic safety in Bulgaria, a road traffic safety strategy will be developed for the period 2021-2030. The new methodology of investigating road accidents will aim to look into all facts and circumstances connected with them. According to traffic police reports, at the moment 96 percent of the road accidents in the country are due to human error on the part of the driver. The new methodology will investigate the conduct of the driver, as well as the roadworthiness of the vehicle, the condition of the infrastructure, the weather conditions etc. According to the proposal specialists from different spheres should also take part in the investigation of serious traffic accidents – traffic police, but also engineers, road safety experts etc.
