New gas interconnection paves the way for TurkStream across Bulgaria

An extension of Bulgaria’s gas transmission network in the sector on the border with Turkey to the Strandzha compressor station was officially opened in the presence of PM Boyko Borissov.

The new infrastructure is necessary so as to connect the national gas transmission grid to the TurkStream gas pipeline.

“As we build, we are affording Bulgaria the opportunity of recovering its place as a major gas hub. That is why we suggested to our partners that this stream be named “Balkan Stream,” said Prime Minister Borissov. He added that “this is a political gas thoroughfare because where there exist major economic interests there are no wars.”

At the beginning of September Bulgartransgaz signed a contract with the Saudi company Arkad for the construction of the gas pipeline across Bulgaria. Gas is planned to start running along the pipeline to the border with Serbia across Bulgaria in 2020. The construction of new gas transmission sectors is in the focus of the government’s energy strategy up until 2020, with which the Ministry of Energy is endeavouring to live up to the changed market conditions in the Balkans. The project for extending the gas transmission infrastructure from the Bulgaria-Turkey border to this country’s border with Serbia is also part of the Bulgarian government’s concept for a gas hub “Balkan”.
