Another EU member-state has turned into a target of the international terrorism after Madrid /2004/ and London /2005/. The bomb attack against the Israeli tourists at the airport of Burgas pushed Bulgaria into the harsh reality, taking away its halo of a safe destination. Six innocent victims placed this country in the black list of states, where anti-Israeli terrorist attacks have taken place. The wave of those has been expanding over the past months. Employees of Israel’s embassies in India and Georgia have been targets of similar acts in 2012 only, while attempts of this kind have ceased in Thailand, Azerbaijan and Cyprus.

Regretfully, the Burgas bombing couldn’t be prevented. Why exactly Bulgaria? Perhaps it is due to the fact that over the last couple of years this country took several times the side of Israel in the Middle East conflict and the other participants in it saw that and disapproved of it – is the opinion of Dr. Mohd Abuasi, director of the Center for Middle East Studies. In the meantime the military cooperation with Israel was strengthened a lot. The place of the attack was for sure chosen deliberately, since a big number of Israeli tourists is concentrated in Burgas and a military field is situated nearby /Novo Selo/. Bulgarian and US troops hold joint trainings there. Everybody knows that the USA is the main enemy for all radical Arabs.

No group has assumed responsibility for the attack yet, but Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman stated firmly that according to his sources of information the Hezbollah Shi’a Lebanese militant group stands behind the bomb attack, supported by Iran.

Bulgaria will do everything necessary those, who are guilty for the Burgas tragedy to be found and sent to court, President Rosen Plevneliev stated. However, this tragedy comes as another proof that in the era of globalization there are no invulnerable countries and peoples and victims of terrorism can be found everywhere.

The English Section of Radio Bulgaria extends its condolences to the relatives and families of all victims of the terrorist attack in Burgas.
