An overview of some major events in the world of broadcasting in 2011

2011 kicked off with some bad news – on January 1 Radio Slovakia International almost ended its emissions on short waves followed by Radio Prague on January 31. The only short wave broadcasts that remained were the ones retransmitted by Radio Miami and Radio Exterior de Espana. Prior to that on December 29, 2010, another radio began broadcasting on short waves, Gunaz Radio, with emissions for Iran. We heard again from Radio Wai from Malaysia and The Cross Radio from island of Pohnpei in Micronesia. The new Christian radio called “Chat” mainly known as Radio Dardasha started on January the 17th from Cyprus. In February, in Australia during the Yasi Cyclone radio Australia began transmissions on short waves of some of their local stations. On 25 February BBC ended its broadcasts in several foreign languages. On 11 February Greenland Radio KNR stopped broadcasting on medium and short waves for good. In March the US Radio broadcasting from an airplane called “Commando Solo” began transmissions to Libya. In Antarctica the radio of Argentina’s base San Gabriel resumed its emissions on 15476 KHz. In April the Netherlands bought transmitters for the equipping of the new radio centre in Madagascar from radio Sweden and in Algeria new short wave transmitters are being installed in Ourgla. In May the station KFBS on the island of Saipan was closed and the US religious radio WTWW bought a new transmitter. The attempts on the broadcasts of Family Radio from Oakland in California that went on for months on end predicting Judgment Day on May 21, 2011 failed. In June we heard again on short waves from Radio Quito from Ecuador and La Voz de Resistencia – the radio of clandestine troops in Colombia. The Italian Radio Relay Service began its transmissions from a new site in Romania. The second half of the year began with a new state in Africa – South Sudan but located there in the capital Juba Radio Peace never resumed its emissions. On July 30, 10 years after the closing of the radio station of the Taliban, Voice of Shari’ah, Radio Afghanistan resumed its broadcasts on short waves with programmes in English and Urdu. The Talibans had banned the possession of radio sets, TV sets, computers and many other devices. In mid-August the pro-Gadaffi Radio Voice of Africa from Libya ended its emissions and Radio Libya returned on short waves in late October. On 13 August a new transmitter of radio “Voice of the Andes” was installed in East Friesland, Germany. Two stations operating from the island of Palau in the Pacific Ocean were already active on short waves in September with broadcasts beamed to Cambodia. In October was installed a new short wave center in Venezuela and a new transmitter in Angola. The last three months of 2011 also brought along bad news for radio broadcasting. Radio Deutsche Welle stopped to broadcast in German and radio Portugal in Portuguese. The closing or the forthcoming closing of world famous radio centres such as Rampisham, UK, Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, Fontbonne owned by Trans World Radio in France and Sines in Portugal were announced. News from the world of broadcasting throughout 2011 can be found in various print and online media.
