Proper technical training and beautiful sound are not enough to be a concertmaster. The leader of the orchestra should be able to gather the musicians under the common sign of musical expressiveness. Mr. Liudmil Nenchev, leader of the Symphonic Orchestra at the Bulgarian National Radio /BNR/ and of the Classic FM Orchestra, has that quality. Stay tuned with the Concertmasters of Bulgaria show and you will find out more about him.
Liudmil Nenchev was born in 1964. His father showed him the road to music, when he gifted a violin to him for his 5th birthday. Today the musician remembers with a smile how disappointed he was, as he had expected some toy. Listen now to Mr. Nenchev on the first lessons with his father and his professional growth:
“Mr. Aleksandar Serafimov, a member of Sofia Soloists was one of my tutors at the Liubomir Pipkov National School of Music. I graduated in 1983 with Trendafil Milanov and then continued my studies at the Academy of Music with his daughter – famous violin player Stoika Milanova. At that time I was already working with the Sofia Philharmonic. In the beginning of 1992 I was invited at the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble and 6 months later I became its concertmaster. I was 27 years old at that time and the people that I had to lead were much older than me. Six of the members were also among the founders of the orchestra that had been playing there since 1961, while I was born in 1964. I learned a lot for those 13 years, spent with Sofia Soloists. It was really prestigious to be the concertmaster of this ensemble, it was a real school.

One of the unforgettable moments in the career of Mr. Nenchev was the opportunity to perform on the same stage with Nigel Kennedy. “It was like a dream come true to me,” the musician shares. In 2005 he became a concertmaster of the Symphonic Orchestra of BNR. He has also worked with the Classic FM Orchestra ever since its establishment back in 2002. Listen next to Liudmil Nenchev again:
“I have always been more interested in symphonic music. At the same time chamber repertoire provides fewer opportunities. I decided to opt for a new challenge. I had had some experience as a leader of symphonic orchestras, but not as a full-time job. I have been the concertmaster of Classic FM Orchestra for ten years now. I took the responsibility to teach those young people how to play in an ensemble.”

“I try to refer to the piece that I play at the moment as if it is my favorite one,” Liudmil Nenchev says. As a solo performer he has played with the Symphonic Orchestra of the BNR, the philharmonic orchestras of Burgas, Pleven and others. He has had solo concerts in Germany. In 1995 he created Sofia String Quartet.
