The 86th edition of the Varna Summer International Music Festival started on June 16th with a concert of Anjela Nisi (soprano), Aurelia Varak (mezzo-soprano) and Bulgarian baritone Ivo Yordanov. The three singers performed arias from operas by Mozart, Puccini, Donizetti and others, accompanied by the symphony orchestra of the Varna opera. Conductor was Francesco Lanzilotta from Italy. The concert was dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the European Festival Association. Traditionally, pieces by Pancho Vladigerov will be performed at the festival while fans of Tchaikovsky will enjoy a performance of his Italian Capriccio. “Among the foreign guests at the festival will be the La Tendre Amor baroque ensemble from Spain, who will perform an opera by Antonio de Literes. For the first time the Hong Kong Soloists ensemble will be guests to the festival. I will also reveal a little secret – the youngest participant at Varna Summer will be 12-year old Martin Zairianov. Bulgarian piano duo Aglika Genova and Lyuben Dimitrov will also stage a concert,” Ms. Dimitrova says.

An interesting project, entitled Two Pianos, Two Worlds will be presented on July 3. This will be a dialogue between two pianos and guests will hear the improvisations of Lyudmil Angelov and Lyubomir Denev. On June 20th, the Varna Opera will stage Carmen by Bizet. “On July 8th pianist Plamena Mangova will have a concert, accompanied by the symphony orchestra of the BNR with conductor Emil Tabakov. One of the most expected concerts is that of Mincho Minchev on July 9th. His son Nikolay Minchev, who plays the violin, will also take part in the concert.”
The Varna Summer Music Festival ends on July 18th with a concert of jazz singer Yildiz Ibrahimova. We end today’s edition of TOM with one of her performances together with the Big Band of the BNR.
