Pop songs about the Black Sea

With its incredible nature and beautiful landscape, the Bulgarian Black Sea coast is among the most picturesque places in the Balkans and a preferred destination for relaxation of foreign tourists. Many Bulgarian musicians draw inspiration for writing new pop songs from the local Bulgarian Riviera.
Many songs describe the beauty of the biggest Bulgarian coastal resort – the seaside capital Varna in Northeastern Bulgaria. One of them is performed by the famous pop singer Yordanka Hristova. Over the years, she has earned a large number of awards in Bulgaria and abroad and has more than 350 songs in her repertoire.
(Yordanka Hristova and her track Varna, music of Georgi Hulyanov, lyrics of Evgenia Gesheva.)

The professional career of Eva and Georgi Naydenov more popular as simply Eva and Gogo started in the late 1960s. At that time, they were part of the Tonika Band with leader composer Stefan Diomov. The formation is undoubtedly one of the most awarded bands in the pop music genre in Bulgaria.
The song Bourgas Nights was written back in 1966 by Ivan Kolarov and the lyrics are of poet Ivan Vanev. Eva and Gogo perform it with the Tonika band and also as a duet.

The next song is again dedicated to the beauties of the coastal city of Bourgas and this time the singers are Margarita Hranova and Hristo Kidikov. They are graduates of the National Music Academy Pancho Vladigerov where they had one and the same professor and they have sung many times on the same stage.
(“You and I near the sea”, music of Kamen Drandiyski, lyrics of Georgi Mravov)

“At a distance of only 20 km from Bourgas, a small city was shining in front of us – its name was Pomorie and it was discreetly keeping our dangerous secret” – goes the text sung by Stefka Berova and Yordan Marchinkov in their song of the 1970s Family Memory for Pomorie. In 1975, the composition earned the second award at the competition Songs about Bourgas and the Sea. The music is of Atanas Kosev, lyrics of Nedyalko Yordanov.

The beautiful coastal town of Nessebar (Southeastern Bulgaria) is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. The ancient buildings and beautiful scenery lend a romantic touch to the place which has inspired many Bulgarian poets. Among them is Vlado Daverov – Song about Nessebar is based on his lyrics and the music is of Mitko Shterev. The performance is of Nevena Tsoneva and Stanislav Kostadinov.
