Vania Stambolova wins silver at 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona
The 400 m hurdles 2006 European champion from Gothenburg, Bulgaria’s Vania Stambolova, won the silver in the same event at the 2010 European Athletics Championships that took place in Barcelona, Spain July 26 – Aug 1. The Bulgarian athlete clocked 53.82 seconds, and struck thus a national record. Natalya Antyukh of Russia won the gold, while the bronze remained for Perry Shakes-Drayton of the United Kingdom.

Bulgarian football clubs suffer no loss in European club tournaments
The four Bulgarian football clubs continue the good performance in the European club tournaments. Thus, Beroe of Stara Zagora, which made a come-back on the European tournament scene after 24 long years, ended in a 1:1 draw as host to Rapid of Vienna in the 3rd preliminary round of the UEFA Europa League. The second match will take place August 3. Levski of Sofia did not defeat Kalmar as their guests in Sweden, but by scoring a 1:1 draw they continued in the 4th preliminary round of the UEFA Europa League. CSKA of Sofia kicked off, as expected, with a victory over Ulster’s Cliftonville. The Bulgarian team beat 3:0 in the first game of the 3rd qualification round of UEFA Europa League, but missed to score on more than one occasion, which prevented them from carrying home a more convincing victory. And finally, the fourth Bulgarian team participating in the European club tournaments, Litex of Lovech, ended in a 1:1 draw versus Slovakia’s Žilina in the third round of the Champions League’ qualifications. If they wish to go on with the tournament, the Bulgarians will have to beat their Slovak rivals on August 4 by all means.

Levski – CSKA of Sofia eternal derby opens Bulgarian premiership
The domestic premiership kicked off offering football fans new emotions. Thus, the eternal rivals, CSKA of Sofia and Levski of Sofia, played versus one another in the first round of the tournament. Levski beat 1:0 much to the joy of their fans at Vassil Levski National Stadium. The new team member, Garra Dembele, scored the only goal in the net in the 39th minute.

Grigor Dimitrov wins tennis tournament in Dortmund, Germany
Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov won the fifth title in his tennis career by winning the Dortmund Tournament in Germany part of the Futures series. In the final he beat Jan-Lennard Struff of the host nation 7:5 and 7:5. Thus, the Bulgarian tennis player has had 20 victories in 24 games. The 19-year-old Bulgarian is coached by Australian Peter McNamara. With the 35 points won Dimitrov will move to 270th place in the ATP ranking.

Swimmer Petar Stoychev triumphs in Canada
Bulgaria’s most successful open waters swimmer Petar Stoychev triumphed yet again in a round of the Swimming Marathon World Cup in the Canadian town of Robertvalle. A week ago Stoychev won the bronze there in the 25 km event, while this time he won the competition in the 32 km distance clocking 6 hours, 40 minutes and 22 seconds, which is a record for the race. Canada’s Simon Tobin was runner-up followed by Damian Blaum of Argentina.

Bulgarian junior wins gold in kayak race
Bulgarian rower Miroslav Kirchev won the European U23&Juniors title in the 500 m single kayak (K1) in the 2010 Moscow European U23&Juniors Championships. On Sunday only two days after the great success, the young Bulgarian won the bronze in the 1 000 m single kayak.
