The World Cup in South Africa is drawing to its end. The remaining 4 matches – the two semifinals and the final – will appoint the world champion for the next four years. The contenders for the final match are the teams of Holland, Uruguay, Germany and Spain. As expected there were surprises at the quarterfinals with a 4:0 win of Germany over Argentina and a 2:1 victory of Holland over Brazil. Days after that victory, Bulgaria won against Holland but in volleyball.
After the phenomenal playing at Wimbledon, the best Bulgarian tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova moved to 35th place in the world tennis ranking. Pironkova has become the first Bulgarian to reach Wimbledon’s semi-finals. She got 1668 points and moved 47 places up the world ranking before the Grand Slam in London. The 22-year old player from the town of Plovdiv in Southern Bulgaria has so far reached 40th place in WTA’s world ranking. Currently the number one women’s player in WTA’s ranking is this year’s Wimbledon champion Serena Williams by 8475 points. Her sister Venus Williams, so far second in the rankings, got knocked out of the Wimbledon Championships by Pironkova and would remain 4th in WTA’s ranking.
The young Bulgarian wrestlers have won altogether five medals at the European youth wrestling competition in the Bulgarian town of Samokov in Southern Bulgaria. In the heavy category up to 120 kg classic style, national-team wrestler Lyubomir Dimitrov took the silver after conceding to David Oganeshvyan from Russia. Nikolay Vichev, 50kg category; Stanislav Kanev, 84kg category; Krum Chuchurov, 55kg category; and Taibe Yusein, 59kg category, got the bronze medals.
The best Bulgarian marksmanship competitor Mariya Grozdeva has won the golden medal at the World Cup in Belgrade with an overall result of 790.7 points.
