What should I choose as my future profession?

“What should I choose as my future profession?” – this is a question that every young person asks himself upon leaving the carefree childhood years and entering the adult world. For better or worse almost half of a person’s life passes at work. That is why it is extremely important to make the right choice of one’s profession. Most of the children have a fairly good idea what they would like to become but later feel disappointed. Besides fulfilling a dream, however, the choice of a future profession must be in accordance with the individual’s talents and abilities. This is the deep conviction of all psychologists. Often parents play an active role when it comes to this decision but they are not always the best advisors. Matters get worse if they try to inflict upon their children the dreams they had for themselves but for some reason did not realize. There is yet another category of young people. They choose a profession in which they can combine their artistic potential with pragmatic everyday life. Such is the case of Denitsa, who at present is in the 11th grade at the National School for Fine Arts “Academician Ilia Petrov”, where she studies oil painting.

“At our school we have the specialties “Oil painting”, “Sculpture”, “Black-and-white etching” and “Computer design”. I am studying “Oil painting” but intend to turn to design when I graduate and combine it with advertising”.

Denitsa goes on and explains that despite the fact that she adores painting it is something that will not provide her with a living. Similar is the opinion of assistant professor Johan Yotov, tutor of “Black-and-white etching” at the National Academy for Fine Arts. He is also in the school board of the school where Denitsa studies, as his son is a pupil there.

“It is a fact that with every year the number of candidates for our profession is decreasing. Not so long ago the work of the artist, his position in society was different, he was respected. Now, in the conditions of market economy, things have changed drastically. At present it does not pay to deal with art. At the same time it is a profession that demands of you to give it all your energy and passion but the reward frequently comes after one passes way. I would say that painting is a rather aristocratic pastime and one must be fully dedicated to it in order to achieve perfection. It is not by chance that my son chose black-and-white etching. This is a field from which he can go in a number of directions”, says Mr. Yotov.

Maria Landova, director of the National school for fine arts, is optimistic about to the future professional realization of her pupils. Here are her arguments:

“The wide spread picture of the artist who is with a cap, a palette and is painting the scenery somewhere in Monmartre is quite false. The artists are everywhere and their work is present all around us. We see it in our shoes and clothes, in the household utilities. After graduating a lot of our students turn to design or start work in advertising agencies. Not everyone who knows how to work with a computer can make a model of an object or create an advertisement. These things need people with creative thinking and our students are just that. This is one of the characteristic features of our school. From the very first day we encourage the children to think creatively. Every school prepares its pupils for life but we not only do that we also prepare them to be creative. One example: a big advertising agency from London, with a branch in Bulgaria, announced a competition for postcards. Our students amazed the foreigners so much that several of them were invited to work there even before they had graduated. Creativity is something that is very much sought. Our pupils not only have good taste, they not only can draw but they also can create. Having in mind that they know the universal language of plastic art they blend well everywhere”.
