Bulgarian national football team captain and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov was once again voted “Bulgaria’s Footballer of the Year” for 2009.110 journalists from 38 Bulgarian printed and electronic media took part in the voting. Thus, the top goal-scorer of the Bulgarian national team with 49 goals went ahead of his colleague Hristo Stoichkov, winning the title for the sixth time. The second best footballer became another Bulgarian playing on the British Isles – Stilian Petrov, and third came Blagoy Georgiev playing for the Russian FC Terek Grozny.

Before the start of the spring season, Bulgaria’s football championship has finally witnessed the end of the long saga surrounding the name of the new coach of FC CSKA. Last week, Romanian football expert Ioan Andone gave his first press-conference as senior coach of CSKA and declared that one of his major priorities would be to lead the team to the groups in one of the most popular European club championship – the Champions League. Ioan Andone is to sign an 18-month contract for a monthly remuneration of 25 thousand euro, the same as the team’s former coach Lyuboslav Penev was paid.

The female volleyball team CSKA is the new winner of the Bulgaria Volleyball Cup. The “red” regained the precious award in a direct struggle versus the previous cup holder Levski Sikonko (Sofia) who took it from them in a dramatic final last year. This is the third final in a row played between these two teams for the Cup. CSKA once again overcame its rival with the undoubted victory of 3:0 games.

14-year-old chess talent Kiprian Berbatov, also famous for being the nephew of Bulgarian football star Dimitar Berbatov, played exceptionally well at another chess tournament in Spain. The Bulgarian chess star finished with a final score of 7 out of 9 points in a heated contest held in the capital of Andalusia, Seville. A total of 216 chess players competed in the tournament. Another four players finished with the same score as Bulgarian Berbatov, the jury placing him 4th, based on additional criteria. The great hope of Bulgarian chess left behind 16 grand masters as well as his coach Yordan Ivanov who finished with a score of 6 out of 9 points.

The best Bulgarian female snowboard champion Alexandra Zhekova took the prestigious fourth place in the start of the Women’s World Bordercross Cup held in the Swiss winter resort Veysonnaz. Bulgarian Zhekova finished after Norwegian Helene Olafsen and Canadians Dominique Maltais and Maelle Ricker. Ricker is atop the standings for the small world cup, with Zhekova being fifth. The Bulgarian snowboarder comes eighth in the overall standings for the big crystal globe.

The only female Bulgarian team playing in the European basketball tournaments is Dunav Ekont (Rousse), which finished its international performance very successfully. Bulgarian basketball players overcame Cyprus Imperial AEL with 77:75 in a return match in this year’s edition of the Eurocup tournament. The Pleven-based team Spartak had a second loss from Serbian OKK from Belgrade in the basketball tournament for men, which is part of the Balkan Basketball League. The Bulgarian players were defeated with 58:77. Thus, our team came in the penultimate 5th position in the final rankings with only two wins until now. The leader in the temporary standings “Levski” had a second defeat in the preliminary B group of the Balkan league, losing from Macedonian FENI. The “blue” team stepped back dramatically in the derby of the round, losing with only 2 points after a final score of 86:88 and now they come second in the group’s standings.

Bulgarian tennis player Sesil Karatantcheva competing for Kazakhstan received a wild card for the main draw of the Australian Tennis Open. In the meantime, Bulgaria’s best male tennis player Grigor Dimitrov lost with 1:3 sets to 30-year-old US player Robert Kendrick in the first round of the qualifications for the Australian Open. 18-year-old Dimitrov who is now at 268th position in the world rankings, made his debut on Australian soil by playing his third match in a Grand Slam tournament.

Bulgaria’s most popular sumo wrestler Kaloyan Mahlyanov, known as Korooshu, won his seventh victory at the first sumo super tournament for this season, held in Tokyo. He is now proceeding in the tournament with a score of 7 wins and only 1 loss. The only two other wrestlers with the same score are Asashoruy and Hakuho.
