As any year 2009 was also full of folk events – remarkable anniversaries, touching concerts and holidays. In today’s Time Out for Music on Radio Bulgaria we bring you some of the most interesting of them. We start with a performance by Boris Mashalov.
They say where there’s love there’s always miracles. A sailor, a painter, Boris Mashalov worked all kinds of jobs before finding his true vocation – music and singing. He founded his own group with which he toured the country and abroad. He sang with a heart full of love for the Bulgarian folk music. That fact brought him a lot of admirers. In January of 2009, we celebrated the 95th anniversary of his birth. A few months after that, there was a special concert in his native town of Sevlievo in northern Bulgaria. Prominent folk singers from across the country attended the concert. Among them were Yanka Rupkina, Iliya Argirov, Hristo Kosashki and Daniel Spasov.

“Many of my dreams have come true and that makes me immensely happy,” says prominent Strandza singer Kalinka Zgurova. In 2009 she celebrated 50 years on stage with a concert in Bulgaria Hall in Sofia. A lot of prominent figures attended it. Among them was the Mystery of Bulgarian Voices choir as well as students from Kanev-Zgurova singing school founded in memory of Kalinka Zgurova’s husband, composer Stefan Kanev.

The all-Bulgarian youth folk festival “With Bulgaria on heart” gathers Bulgarian children who live across the globe. The festival was founded by the late Dr. Anna Karaangelova in 2004 together with folk singer Iliya Lukov. In 2009, there were guests from Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania and Bulgaria. The children from Ukraine were particularly happy to meet with folk singer Lyubka Rondova. “It is an honor to these young people who haven’t forgotten their roots. We hardly realize how immensely important this event is for them. For six straight years, children travel from far to the Black Sea town of Kavarna to attend the festival. They are Bulgarians by origin,” says Lyubka Rondova.

“A song rainbow over Kutev” is the title of a competition held by the folk school Filip Kutev in the town of Kotel. Children from different ages and corners of the country took part in it. The idea of the competition is to introduce young musicians to the possibilities for education provided by the school as well as to students from it. The students from Filip Kutev folk school in Kotel perform at home and abroad on an annual basis.

“Music makes people happy regardless of where they were born,” said one of the participants in the 4th International Folk Festival “With the songs of Biserovi sisters” held in the town of Sandanski in southwestern Bulgaria. Among the guests were Kolot Midbar from Israel, Terra Mea from Sardinia, Jet and Andrew duo from the U.K. and many others. During the festival, the book “From roots to top” was presented. It portrays the long and successful road of Biserovi sisters from a small village to world stages.

In 2009, the 6th International Folk Festival “Malashevo sings and dances” took place. There were some 4000 performers from 15 states and 3 continents. There were groups from Romania, Spain, Cyprus and Hungary.
