At the Olympic Games in Vancouver, alpine skiers Kilian Albrecht and Stefan Georgiev finished among the first 25 in the ski slalom.

Austrian Kilian Albrecht, who is competing for Bulgaria, finished 24th in the first run. In the second run, he managed to move 4 positions ahead and was 20th in the final standings. Stefan Georgiev finished 30th after the first run but in the second run, moved 5 positions ahead and finished 25th. Italian skier Giulianno Razzolli stormed to a convincing win of the Olympic slalom.

Bulgarian snow boarder Ivan Ranchev had a satisfactory performance, taking 26th position in the parallel giant slalom competition on his Olympic debut in Vancouver. Canadian snowboarder Jasey-Jay Anderson is the new Olympic champion in this discipline.

The three-time Olympic medallist Evgenia Radanova dropped out in the heats at 1000 meters at the Olympic short track event. In Vancouver, Bulgaria’s best speed skater finished 7th at 1500 meters and 9th at 500 meters, thus becoming the best Bulgarian athlete at the 21 Winter Olympics.

 

The pretender for winning the World Chess title, Bulgarian grandmaster Veselin Topalov, won the Chess super tournament in the Spanish town of Linares, after he outplayed Israel chess player Boris Gelfand in the last round. Thus, Topalov won 6.5 points out of a maximum of 10 and went ahead of the other best player – Russian Alexander Grischuk. Veselin Topalov won outright the tournament in the Spanish province of Andalusia, better known as “The Chess Wimbledon”. This was Topalov’s last game in a competition before World Championship match against Viswanathan Anand that is to be played from April 21 to May 12 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

 

Bronze Olympic medallist from Beijing 2008 Radoslav Velikov and Ivo Angelov won their first Golden belts at the Wrestling Tournament “Dan Kolov – Nikola Petrov” held in the Black-sea town of Bourgas. At the finals in the 55 kg freestyle category, Radoslav Velikov of Levski Sports Club, world champion from Guandzhou 2006, defeated Maxim Petrov from the National Sports Academy with 2:0 and won the Golden Dan Kolov belt. The two-time bronze medallist of the European championships in Varna 2005 and Vilnius 2009 Ivo Angelov defeated his co-team wrestler Roumen Savchev from Lovech Sports Club in the 60 kg classic style category with 2:0 and won the Golden Nikola Petrov belt. More than 200 wrestlers from 20 countries took part in the wrestling tournament.

And now football news. The spring phase of Bulgaria’s Football Championship has started. After the 16th round, no changes occurred in the standings as the teams in the top positions won their matches. The leader in the temporary standings is Litex FC with 38 points after a convincing victory as host over Lokomotiv Mezdra FC with 3:0. Second is CSKA FC with 34 points, which won its match against visiting Lokomotiv Plovdiv FC with a hard-won victory of 3:2. Third is Sofia FC Lokomotiv that defeated the visiting team of Beroe with 2:0.
