Today we mark St. Dimitar’s day

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church marks today the Day of Martyr St. Dimitar. The day is called Dimitrovden. St. Dimitar (Demetrius) saved Thessalonica from enemy attacks many times and was revered in Thrace and Macedonia even in his lifetime. Later Bulgarians and Greeks started disputing the auspices of St. Demetrius from Thessalonica. Due to his Slavonic origin all Slavic people celebrate the saint. He died as a martyr of his fate in Christ on October 25, 306Popular cult presents St. Demetrius as a brother to St. George. As a harbinger of winter and cold weather, people also related him to to the world of the dead.
