Some 670,000 tons of food disposed of in Bulgaria each year

On World Food Day, October 16, a national week on access to good food started in Bulgaria. According to FAO estimates, 1/3 of the world's food is discarded or lost in the production chain.

In Bulgaria, about 670,000 tons of edible food is disposed of annually, equivalent to about 2 billion portions or 100 kg. of food per capita, Hristina Bancheva, Executive Director of Ecocentric Foundation, told BNR.

According to her, more than 1.5 million people suffer from hunger. According to Bancheva, the quantity disposed of could be allocated in a reasonable way so as to satisfy the need of the rest of the population.
