Bulgaria’s Parliament adopted on first reading the State Social Security budget for 2020. The MPs from GERB and the United Patriots voted in favor. The Bulgarian Socialist Party and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms did not support the new budget with the motif that it does not offer enough reforms. In her speech, the leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party Kornelia Ninova pointed out that the Bulgarian government creates a paradoxical situation by setting the poverty threshold at EUR 186 for 2020 and the minimum pension at EUR 112. According to the budget framework, the minimum salary in Bulgaria will increase to EUR 312 on January 1 next year. Bulgaria’s Minister of Labor and Social Policies Biser Petkov pointed out that the draft budget is realistic and feasible and the risks are minimized.
