Bulgaria has joined the European Citizens' Initiative “Save Bees and Farmers”, which started on November 25th. By collecting at least 1 million signatures, the campaign aims at bringing legislative changes at European level to ban synthetic pesticides. Beekepers say that it was needed to “phase out synthetic pesticides in EU agriculture by 80% by 2030, starting with the most hazardous, to become free of synthetic by 2035.” Only pesticide-resistant and pesticide-free agriculture can ensure the nutrition of present and future generations, and respond to the growing challenges posed by climate change, say the organizers of the citizens' initiative. Every year in Bulgaria poisonous chemicals destroy tens of thousands of bee families, so Bulgarian beekeepers hope to collect at least 15 thousand signatures against the use of synthetic pesticides.
