Protestors against the water crisis in the town of Pernik attempted to storm the building of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works in Sofia. The protesters demanded the resignation of the government.
The police used pepper spray on the protesters, as a result of which 30 were given medical attention. Two police officers were wounded. Later the protest moved in front of the Council of Ministers building.
The protest is organized by Vuzrazhdane political party.
Ivan Vitanov, former manager of the Water Company, Pernik, and Sevdelina Kovacheva, former acting mayor have been arrested over the water crisis in the town. They have been detained for 72 hours, pending the decision of the prosecutor’s office whether to keep them in permanent custody. Ivan Vitanov is accused of deliberate mismanagement and concluding a disadvantageous deal, and Sevdelina Kovacheva – of malfeasance.
