The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has registered the first for this year avian flu outbreak in Bulgaria.
There are 5,830 birds in the infected duck farm in the town of Rakovski which will be slaughtered. Avian flu does not affect humans, and meat and products do not pose any risk to human health after thermal treatment.
A 3-kilometre protection zone around Rakovski has been set down and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone around the location of the outbreak. Within these two zones there are 49 poultry farms with 432,000 birds. The holding of bird fairs, markets and exhibitions is prohibited, as is the resettlement of birds for replenishing the population of game. The last outbreak of avian flu in Bulgaria was registered in April 2019.
