Meatfare Sunday is a moveable feast, whose date depends on Easter, falling on the Sunday 8 weeks before Easter. On Meatfare Sunday the family dinner includes meat, hence the name of the feast day.

One of the traditions on this day is to visit the bride’s godfather and parents, and take them boiled chicken, bread and wine. Pork with sauerkraut, cabbage leaves with meat filling or banitsa, made with animal fat are on the menu of the festive dinner. It is the last time that Orthodox Christians who observe Lent are allowed to put meat on the table before Easter which this year falls on 19 April.
