Number of COVID-19 cases in Bulgaria now at 187, crisis expected to be overcome by mid-April

| updated on 3/22/20 8:18 PM

The number of people infected with COVID-19 in Bulgaria has reached 187. A total of 6,000 persons have been tested so far in Bulgaria as 83% of those infected are below the age of 60, said Gen. Ventsislav Mutafchiyski who is in charge of the National Crisis Staff at the press briefing today. The number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals is now 30. The peak of the epidemic will be in the next 2-3 weeks, but the number of people who will get infected cannot be predicted, Prof. Mutafchiyski said. A possible decision to extend the state of emergency will be based on the dynamics of the situation, he added, sharing his prediction that the situation will be in control by mid-April.
We have a duty to help our brothers in Macedonia. This is what being brotherly nations means, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said regarding the protective equipment requested by Skopje. We go through a crisis only via deprivation, mobilization and unity. Our first task is to protect people's lives and health, Borissov wrote on the social network. The measures undertaken to fight the coronavirus epidemic upset people and do not carry political dividends, but they are the right thing to do and we will do them right, the prime minister promised.
