The remains of Verditsa city-fortress in the vicinity of Tvurditsa in the central portion of Southern Bulgaria are to be studied and conserved, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports.
For the purpose the Ministry of Culture is granting 18,000 leva /almost 9,000euro/ to the museum of history in the town. The project envisages clearing the remains of the one-nave church east of the fortress wall and laying open part of the outer wall of the fortress.
Verditsa was once the shortest route from Thrace to Northern Bulgaria, and it was important for the defence of the capital Turnovo. In 1959 a church was discovered 20 metres to the southeast of the fortress which has been dated by archaeologists to the 11th-12th century.
