The Christmas or Nativity Lent begins, which according to Christian tradition lasts 40 days, start today. Along with abstaining from food of animal origin, Christian fasting also means abstaining from bad and sinful thoughts, words and deeds. According to what St. John Chrysostom said, the benefits of fasting should not limit us only to abstaining from eating animal food, because true fasting is a departure from evil.
When the consciousness is pure from thoughts of our earthly needs, then our soul is purified. We begin to perceive our environment differently, and the people around us become kinder to us because we open our hearts and allow them to be filled only with love. Then we remember that earthly cares are nothing but trials that make us even stronger and help us seek the good everywhere. And today, in this year full of trials for all of humanity, we urge you to open your hearts to the love of your neighbors, show compassion and humanity to strangers. Also choose your words wisely so you could avoid inadvertently hurting someone. Be humble.
