92 Bulgarian municipalities increased their population due to migration сn 2021. The upward trend is mostly in big cities, a reversal of the tendency from 2020 when, due to the Covid pandemic, the population in large municipalities declined, the Institute for Market Economics says.

7,000 people have been added to the population of Sofia, in Plovdiv, Varna and the municipalities of Burgas the growth rate is lower. There are larger municipalities where a decline in population has been registered: in Dobrich by 477 people, in Sliven by 384 and in Vratsa by 224 people. Other regional centres have registered a positive migration trend. In relative terms only 12 municipalities have a positive mechanical growth of over 2% of their population, whereas in 2020 such a tendency was registered in 89 smaller r municipalities.
