Tonight in Sofia, at the scene of the serious accident that killed two young women, a civil protest was held against the lack of control over road safety. It was organized through social networks.
The protesters are demanding that the government take action against the lack of penalties for violators of the Road Traffic Act. Last night at around 11pm a driver drove his SUV through a red traffic light on a Sofia boulevard, causing a crash. Two women, aged 22 and 26, were killed on the spot, and a taxi driver was injured in the crash. Georgi Semerdjiev, a former Levski football player who fled the scene, was arrested today. He has multiple criminal records, some of them drug-related. He did not have a driving licence due to previous traffic offences.
"There is a sharp spike in road accidents at night in the capital because there is no real physical control. There are hundreds of drivers with over 50 offences who continue to drive their cars," Bogdan Milchev of the Road Safety Institute told BNR.
