On November 25 the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Clement of Ohrid, a Bulgarian scholar and founder of the Ohrid Literary School. St. Clement of Ohrid is considered to be the first bishop of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and one of the Seven Saints. St. Clement of Ohrid was one of the most prominent disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius, who contributed to the creation of the Slavonic alphabet. It is no coincidence that the saint was chosen as a patron of the first university in Bulgaria - Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski” (founded in 1888), which today celebrates its patron saint's day.
The newly elected professors will receive their certificates on the patron saint’s day of Bulgaria’s biggest university. The award ceremony “Best Young Scientist of Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski" will also take place today.
The Bulgarian Antarctic base on Livingston Island was also named after St. Clement of Ohrid.
